Popular heart burn medication Zantac has been recently involved in a class action lawsuit that alleges unhealthy levels of a carcinogen that may lead to cancer. In September, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that they found N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in Zantac. NDMA is a probable carcinogen, according to the FDA, that can cause short term and long term damage to the body. Plaintiffs are accusing drugmakers Sanofi and Boerhringer Ingelheim of manufacturing and selling the product even after knowing the potential dangers that it caused.

What do Zantac Lawsuits Claim?

When the FDA issued the advisory, it claimed that the levels of contamination were low, however, the levels were between 3,000 and 26,000 times higher than safe levels. At the time that the research was conducted, researchers found that Zantac’s ingredient ranitidine reacts with water that may cause a chemical reaction that produces NDMA.

NDMA is a harmful carcinogen that may cause cancer as well as some short term and long term effects such as liver damage and increased risk of liver, kidney, and lung tumors. Over exposure to NDMA can also cause:

  • jaundice
  • nausea
  • fever
  • vomiting
  • abdominal cramps
  • dizziness

If you have experienced any of these side effects after taking Zantac or have developed stomach or bladder cancer, we want to speak with you.
